Life Outside

THE BOX

Yes, I have a life outside of school.

I think that many of us students have been convinced that our GPA, grades, and classes we take are what define if we are a "good" student or not. However, I would have to disagree. By being well rounded and involved in many other activities, I have been able to expand my knowledge by problem solving, communicating with people outside my comfort zone, and working hands on with situations I can encounter in everyday life. These are important aspects to the development on how I will approach certain circumstances that, frankly, I would not be able to learn in a classroom.

P.R.I.D.E.

P.R.I.D.E. stands for promoting relationships in diversity through education. As a club, we host many events that allows students to be engaged in different cultures, languages, and traditions from all over the world. Our goal is to unite our school, to stand in one body with the knowledge and acceptance of everyone's individuality, culture wise.

Being latina myself, I decided to join P.R.I.D.E. my freshmen year so that I could be part of an organization that embraces different cultures throughout the entire world. I realized this club would allow people to try new foods and hear different languages that we are not accustomed to in our "Weston Bubble." It would be giving the students on campus more opportunities to learn about places and traditions you would not necessarly get to learn about in the classroom. I knew that this was the perfect club for me. So it lead me wanting to work my way up the offficer board. After a lot of hard work and dedication was put into many different events such as International night, International Fest, Health Fair, Talent Show, and many more, I had a better chance to become part of the board.

Sophmore year came along and I was promoted to be on the board as Talent Show assistant which is one of the biggest events that P.R.I.D.E. host since it is the most time consuming for preparations and most popular for students to attend to. Not only I had to fulfill all my duties for being the Talent Show assistant, however, I also had to put as much effort on all the other events too since a big part of pride is working as team with the officer board.

Talent Show Assistant

After another great year in P.R.I.D.E. I was promoted to Talent Show Director. I felt prepared enough to take on this task. It took months of preparation but the outcome was great. We had about 200 people come, raising 1,500 dollars. The performance ran very smoothly, everyone knew where they needed to be and what they needed to do. The tech did not fail us allowing all the microphones to function properly throughout the whole show. All I can say, Is that It was an extremely rewarding feeling hosting such a successful show.

Talent Show Director

As Talent Show Director, I organized every aspect of executing this show successfully. I am in charge of holding auditions, running rehearsals, selecting theme and decorations, and forming my own committee who will help me make this show run smoothly.

As Talent Show Assistant, I was in charge of the chronological organization of the performers, decorations, and guiding anyone who had questions on the night of the show.

2016-2017 Vice President

In my final year of high school, I can proudly say I am the Vice Preseident of P.R.I.D.E. I will be handling all the school activities that Pride will participate in along with the float for the Pep Rally during spirit week. There are two Vice President's which means I will recieve the privelgde in working with Mason Eiss. He is in charge of the Education aspect of the club and also with Michelle Nyguen, the 2016-2017 president of P.R.I.D.E. I know we have a great officer board this year and this will be such a great experience. Working my way to the top of the chain has been one of the many rewarding experiences I have obtained. I continue to learn every single day on how to be better in everything I do and I will continue to keep that mentality through all of my obstacles I will encounter in the future.

First Baptist Ministry

At First Baptist at Weston, many different ministries are provided. A few different groups are youth groups, single groups, and senior groups. On the Epilektos leadership team, our job is to plan, execute (host), and evaluate all the events in Fusion, the youth group at First Baptist.

For someone to have a better understanding of what this particular ministry does, I would assume they would need to know what the ministry believe's in. By sharing my testimony in a nutshell I believe I can make it easier for you to grasp the concept of our mission.

Testimony

I was raised Catholic until the age of 12 which means I was already baptized, I had done my first communion, and went to CCD every tuesday night so that I would eventually be able to receive my confirmation. However, my family became more of non-practicing Catholics which only caused me to separate from the church. For about two years, I did not participate in any religious activities except on christmas, thanksgiving, and easter. In my opinion, I was still fairly young to understand the concept of faith. In those two years, I was living without a purpose and was focused on the materialistic things around me. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary, just simply making mistakes that any middle schooler would make. At the age of 14, a friend of mine invited me to his youth group, Fusion, so I could check it out. I rejected his invitation finding no need to go to "whatever he was inviting me to." A week later he had asked me again which was followed by another rejection. The third time he insisted, I was with my bestfriend who also encouraged me to go. I finally took a leap of "faith" and gave it a shot.

That was on Wednesday September 10th, 2014. This was the day I truly learned about Jesus Christ. I understood that Jesus Christ died for the sin of every single person on the cross and that those who put there faith him will not perish but have a life eternal with him. Of course, it sounds to good to be true but that is where my faith comes into play. I continued to read and return to Fusion to learn more and more about God through his scripture and what I can now call my church. I continued to come together in fellowship with other christians and worship every moment I could. Now I can say I have been a christian give or take 2 years and haven't carried such reassurance on my shoulder as I do now.

Leadership Team

As I continued to grow in my faith, my desire to grow in the church grew too. Becoming more involved in the ways I could was what I wanted to achieve especially when I found myself evangelizing everyday.

Epilektos is the name of our student leadership team. We are in charge of organizing and hosting all the events in the youth department such as retreats, camps, coffee houses, and other activities that the youth group can do together along with being the role models of the church. Our leadership team is divided into different committee's such as Coffee House team, Hyperactive team, and Third Month team. Each group is in charge of there event every 3 months and as one big team we plan winter retreat and summer camp.

I am on the Coffee House team and along with going to youth group every Wednesday, I attend the leadership team meeting the first Monday of every month. My event will always take place on a friday so I make sure to be there a few hours prior to set all the decorations up and meet with the bands as planned. Being on the leadership team for my church not only allows me to grow in my faith but also allows me to learn all the different aspects to being part of a team and executing multiple projects.
